4. Say It’s Possible – Terra Naomi

Yes, she’s my ex-girlfriend.  But that doesn’t mean I don’t think she’s one of the greatest singer-songwriters alive, and I would have put this song here before we ever met…

3. Teenagers – Chemical Romance

I’m fourteen when I listen to this song. 500 times in a row. And it’s still just as hooky as the first time I heard it.

2. Couldn’t You Wait – Silkworm

1. Tears Dry on Their Own – Amy Winehouse

I first heard this song in July of 2007.  I had just gotten separated, and I met a beautiful young woman named Veronica.  We spent the night together and I was driving her back to her home in Palmdale, California at about six in the morning. She was telling me how much she loved Amy Winehouse, as it was helping her get over a heartbreak.  I didn’t know any of Winehouse’s songs except ‘Rehab’, of which I wasn’t a big fan.  So Veronica played ‘Tears Dy on Their Own’ on her shitty little cell phone.  She held it up between us and leaned in close as we drove through the mountains, the morning sun revealing itself in a cloudless blue sky.  My life wasn’t the most stable it had ever been, but in that moment I knew everything was going to be all right.  I relive that moment every time I hear this song.  It’s an amazing tune, but it’s the moment it attached itself to that really makes it number one.

P.S. It was Veronica who took me to my first demolition derby a couple weeks later.
